A Parent's Guide to Schools in Sandy, Utah

by Tiffany Rich & Wayne Burton

Sandy is one of the largest cities in Salt Lake County, and its schools reflect decades of steady, established neighborhoods stretching from the valley floor up toward the mountains. Families here have an unusually large number of elementary schools to choose from, several long-standing middle and high schools, and one well-regarded STEM charter school. As a Realtor who works throughout the south Salt Lake Valley, I put together this guide to help you sort through the options before you start touring homes.

1. How the School System Is Organized

Sandy is part of Canyons School District, which also serves Cottonwood Heights, Draper, Midvale, and part of Sandy's neighbor cities. Canyons uses a K-6, 7-8, 9-12 structure, which is a bit different from the K-6, 7-9, 10-12 pattern you'll see in Jordan School District cities like West Jordan or Riverton. Sandy is large enough that it's split across several high school feeder patterns, primarily Alta High and Jordan High, with boundary lines that generally follow the older street grid.

Because Sandy is well established, boundary changes are less frequent than in newer cities, but I still verify the current assignment for any specific address before a family writes an offer.

2. Public Schools in Sandy

Why does Sandy have so many elementary schools? Sandy is one of the most populous cities in the county, and its elementary schools were built decades ago on a smaller, more walkable scale rather than a few oversized buildings.

How do Sandy schools compare on ratings? Ratings vary a good deal by neighborhood here since Sandy covers such a large and diverse area, from the benches near the mountains to older neighborhoods closer to State Street, so I always recommend checking the specific assigned school.

Which high school will my kids attend? It depends on the address, but most Sandy neighborhoods feed into either Alta High or Jordan High, both long-established Canyons District schools.

3. Charter School Options

Sandy is home to Beehive Science & Technology Academy, a STEM-focused charter school with a K-5 elementary campus and a 6-12 secondary campus at the same address. It's consistently one of the highest-performing charter schools in the state and has built a reputation for strong math and science outcomes.

4. What Makes Sandy Schools Attractive to Families

Sheer number of options. With sixteen elementary schools alone, Sandy offers more neighborhood-level choice than almost any other city in the valley.

Established communities. Many Sandy neighborhoods have been around for decades, which often means mature trees, sidewalks, and long-tenured teachers.

Mountain access. Schools in the eastern part of Sandy sit close to the canyons, which many outdoor-minded families see as a real perk.

5. Questions to Ask When You're House Shopping in Sandy

Which elementary, middle, and high school does this exact address feed into today?

How does the assigned school's rating compare to nearby Sandy neighborhoods?

Is this home zoned for the Alta High or Jordan High feeder pattern?

How far is the commute to Beehive Science & Technology Academy if a charter option interests your family?

Has this part of Sandy had any recent boundary adjustments?

6. How My Dad and I Can Help

I'm Tiffany Rich, and together with my dad, Wayne Burton, I work as a father-daughter Realtor team specializing in the south Salt Lake Valley, including Sandy. With so many schools to compare, we help families narrow down which Sandy neighborhood fits both their school priorities and their budget. We also work regularly with empty nesters and retirees who are downsizing out of a larger Sandy home, so whichever chapter you're in, we're glad to help you weigh your options.
